I remember the image of my mother's feet well, that I took ca. 1967 for a school photo assignment. Looking back, the presence of the Marlboro cigarette ads in the lower right hand corner of this shot seems very ironic. I moved to New York City in 1970, and not too long after that I met the photographer Ernst Haas, for whom I worked for many years. He was the one who helped create the Marlboro Man. He was always put down for shooting the Marlboro ads. He would say "Do you think that cigarettes are the only thing that may have caused this outbreak of cancer?". He would use their fees to fund his personal projects, like the famous "Creation" book, published 1971, which sold over 350,000 copies.

It was about 35 years ago that my mom stopped smoking cigarettes. The story is, that she was not able to go out and buy cigarettes, due to a major snow storm in Detroit which lasted about 4 days... I remember her smoking 4 packs of Pall Mall's when I was growing up...

I guess things catch up with you later on in life.

The anniversary of my mom's death from small cell cancer was on July 10, 2008.
